The Membership Committee at Congregation Agudath Sholom is dedicated to fostering a warm, welcoming environment for all who seek to be part of our community. Our mission is to connect with both newcomers to Stamford and longtime residents who are still looking to find the right Shul or community. Through personal outreach, we invite individuals to explore all that our synagogue has to offer, from youth events to volunteer opportunities with our various committees.
Most people moving into a new synagogue are young married couples, but recruitment is aimed all people. After moving to Stamford in 2015, I determined that more could be done for older people (empty nesters). They have unique differences—maybe retired, may have grown-up kids, may lack friends. This is one example of an orientation but there are many other variations.
Most synagogues welcome new members, who tend to be married young couples, and orient activities toward younger members. We evaluated our synagogue’s membership (525 total members) in September 2023, and we found that 61% of our membership (320 members) were over the age of 54 years. We further judged there was insufficient social activity for this group. Therefore, we elected to plan more social events for 55+ Empty Nesters via social activities and trips.
